Edge as Center - Post Industrial Design

Brickbottom, Somerville, MA






The City of Somerville, Massachusetts and the Boston Society of Architects sponsored an international urban design ideas competition entitled: “EDGE as CENTER: en­visioning the post-industrial landscape”. Redevelopment strategies and design visions for a pivotal post-industrial site in close proximity to downtown Boston.

The Brickbottom area has become partially colonized by members of the artistic community. The Brickbottom Artist’s Cooperative and Joy Street Studios contributes to the regional art scene. Reorientation of Brickbottom’s economy towards arts, design, new media and cultural sectors is a City a community priority.

Entrants considered the following planning goals and problems in formulating their planning and design schemes:

Housing, Economic development, Innovation & creativity, Open space, Transportation and infrastructure, Smart growth, Environmental/ecological issues, History and cultural diversity, Identity, Urban Design Vision, Land Use, Infrastructure and Phasing.
